Sensei Norm Cleva started practicing Judo in 1960 while serving in the U.S. Navy in San Diego.He represented the Navy Marine team at the 1964 Olympic Trials. He is a two time 86+ kg national Judo champion in the 1986 and 1992 masters division. He is also a third degree black belt in Shingitai Jujitsu. After moving to Fort Mill two years ago, he found out about the Rock Hill Judo academy and Sensei Ian, and is now able to continue practicing Judo, the Gentle Way. Sensei Norm says to his students, “One of myy old Senseis told me that the secret to martial arts is practice, practice, practice.”
Sensei Ian Vosper started training Judo in Devon, England at the St. James Judo Club at the age of 9. At the age of 18, he earned the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt). Later, he would go on to earn the rank of Nidan (second degree black belt). Sensei has also trained in other styles of martial arts, including Kenpo and Shotokan Karate. Sensei Ian formed the Rock Hill Judo Academy in 2015 with a desire to share the art of Judo with Rock Hill and the surrounding areas.
Sensei Mary Krug Lozner recently joined the Rock Hill Judo Academy. She is the very first American to win a gold medal in an international Judo competition after her victory in the British Open in London, UK in the 48kg division. Mary is also an inductee of the USA Judo Hall of Fame. The Rock Hill Judo Academy is glad to have Sensei Mary teaching and practicing Judo in Rock Hill.
